Speed’n’eze friction polish gives a good finish: the finish must not mark or stain thread. Overall length may vary from 100mm (common) to 110mm. Wood must be fine and close-grained. Traditionally, fruit woods would often be used. The Bobbin illustrated is of a simple design; there are many more complex and ornate styles available from bobbin makers. Final finish must be perfectly smooth so as not to snag the lace thread.
