Newsletter July 2004

July 2004 Update

HI, unfortunately this is not the newsletter I was hoping to have sent out by now as I am having problems finishing it off, some sort of writers block.   So I have decided to send out this short update to let you know a few important things before time runs out.  Hopefully I will be able to finish the newsletter in the next couple of weeks, but no promises, if you have anything you would like to appear in the newsletter please let me have it.

Fame But No Fortune

The following is an extract from a letter received from the AWGB.

“You will be aware that the AWGB attends all of the major woodworking exhibitions throughout the year.   We use these shows to publicise the existence of the AWGB and what it can do for members, and for the woodturning fraternity at large.  A large part of the stand is given over to exhibiting the work of our members.

In a seminar year the basis of this work is made up of pieces selected from the Instant Gallery at the seminar.  In the year between seminars it is our practise to ask branches to provide a piece of work, which is representative of the branch, for the AWGB to display at the exhibitions that we attend.

I am writing to you in the hope that you will be able to provide something for us to exhibit during the 2004/2005 season.

Any work submitted can be offered for sale if it is so wished, but please be aware the AWGB will keep 10% of the sale price as a commission.   We would ask that work submitted should be new work and not work that has been shown before.”

As mentioned at the last two club meetings we will be holding a competition at the August meeting to choose the piece we will be submitting to the AWGB.   The judging will be done by all members who are present at the meeting by secret ballot.   They will have about an hour to inspect all the entries then the first round of voting will take place via a secret ballot.  If there is one piece that has at least 51% of the vote that piece will be the winner.   If there is no outright winner the top 5 or so pieces will go forward to the second round and so on until we have one entry with 51% or more of the votes.

The rules are as follows:

  • You must be a club member on the 7th August 2004.
  • It must be a turned piece of work, the definition of this is wide as can be seen by the gallery pieces this year.
  • No more than two entries per member, an entry can be a single piece or a pair of items such as salt and pepper grinders or a set of boxes etc. etc. etc.
  • It must be a new piece by this they mean it must not have been entered in a large show or competition before, not that it has only just been made.
  • All entries must be submitted to the secretary by 10.15am on August 7th 2004
  • The winning piece will be kept by the Secretary and delivered to the AWGB after the competition.
  • The AWGB will keep the submitted piece until about June/July 2005, they will then return it to the owner, unless sold.

In order to make sure everyone has the opportunity to enter I am more than willing to collect your entry from you on Friday 6th August or before.  So if you can not make the meeting or won’t get there till late please contact me by phone on 01733 333010 or 07778 596401 or by email on secretary@villageturners.org.uk and I will make arrangements to collect the pieces and also to return them to you after the competition.  If you have any questions I can be contacted on the above number.

August Meeting

There are a number of things happening at the August meeting as well as the competition above.

Carving

Following on from his successful talk at the July meeting Glyn Mould will be holding a four hour carving taster session at the meeting.   He will be providing work benches, tools, wood and his expertise in both carving and teaching, all you need to provide is the very reasonable sum of £6.50.  There are 15 places available and will be filled on a first come first served basis.   If you want to make sure of a place please contact me to book one, if you do this you will need to pay the £6.50 in advance.

Workshop

At the other end of the barn the clubs lathes and other equipment will be set up for you to use.   There will be at least 4 lathes, the grinder and the bandsaw all available for use.  If you would like some help in sharpening your tools, with a difficult bit of wood, some tuition or something else just ask.   Again this will be on a first come first served basis but you can always contact me to book a place.  You are advised to bring your own tools along with you.

Lincolnshire Woodcraft

Also Lincolnshire Woodcraft will be visiting us with a large selection of wood at reduced prices, I hope, and some special offers so don’t forget your money.

Robert Sorby Demo

I have now heard from Robert Sorby and we have a date of Wednesday 25th August 2004 for their evening demo.  The start time will be 7.00pm at the normal location, bring plenty of money with you as they will have some bargains for us, or so they say.

Fortune, Maybe, But No Fame

Sorry I couldn’t resist the title, but it is an opportunity for you to earn some money from your hobby.   It has been mentioned before but following a meeting this week between members of the committee and Sacrewell Farm the sale of your work through the shop has now been formalised.  All you have to do is bring your work along to the next meeting marked with your name, either a label or some other way, and the price you want for it.   We will then pass the items over to the Manageress and they will be put on display.  Further details at the next meeting and hopefully in the newsletter.

Volunteers Needed

We still need members to do demonstration days at Sacrewell over the weekends and now the school holidays have started during the week.  Everyone who has taken part in one of these days have thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

We now have the large storage cupboard in the corner of the barn so everything is easy to get at and safe from the public.   Also the record lathe is on a wheeled cupboard and easier to move around.   This month some members of the club are rewiring the barn so there will be more sockets available.

So please volunteer to do a day or more at the farm as this also keeps us in their good books. If you would like to volunteer please contact either me or John Butler.

Diary Dates

  • 25th July 10am – 4pm MAC Timbers wood sale & demonstrations also second hand tools
  • 6th – 8th August Good Timber Summer sale.
