June 2004 Demonstration

Professional wood turner Guy Ravine came along to give us a demonstration on how to use that free wood we sometimes manage to get hold off.  He started off with a Holly branch and split it up using hand tools to produce some blanks.  He then rough turned them into bowls to be put aside to dry out before they are finished.  He also did some spindle work (a honey dipper), demonstrated thread chasing and gave us a few hints and tips.

It was a very enjoyable day marred only by the low turnout, only 14 members turned up which is the lowest turnout at any meeting for quite sometime, our usual turnout is about 30 members/visitors.  This meeting took place during school half term and I have since been told by some members that they couldn’t make the meeting due to family commitments such as grandkids visiting etc.  In future we will try and arrange external demonstrators to visit outside of school holidays.

We were also going to have the gavel competition but owing to only having one entry this was postponed to a later meeting.
