February 2004 Meeting

This was our first meeting in hopefully what will become our new home and everyone agreed it went very well.  There were a few teething problems but that was only to be expected, like me forgetting to bring the milk.  The main problems were setting things up and putting them away at the end of the meeting, we had some volunteers but more would be very welcome.  Towards the end of the meeting it started to get a bit cold but this will be sorted for March when we will have additional heaters set up.

There were 26 members signed in and four guests all of whom said they will come back again.  In addition there were at least twelve day visitors to the farm who came in to have a look to see what was going on and have a chat.

After an introduction Bill and Cilla from Cambridge Blanks gave a short talk on who they were and how they started selling wood to turners etc.  As mentioned last month, Bill is a turner himself and started collecting, preparing and drying wood for his own use.  After a little while he had more than he could use himself so started to sell to friends and other turners.  From there the business has grown, they still work for a living and sell the wood as a sideline.  They brought along a large selection of native wood for sale (see photo gallery below) which went down very well with those present, several members cars went home looking rather low at the back.

Talking to Bill & Cilla before they left they said they had enjoyed themselves and it had been worthwhile for them to come along and yes, they would like to come back again, I will let you know when this has been arranged.

Following this Graham Booth gave us a demonstration of bowl turning with decoration. As you can see from the photo gallery everyone enjoyed the demonstration and as usual picked up a few hints and tips.

The members’ gallery was again well supported with over twenty pieces from different members.
